About the Great Big Paddle

The Great Big Paddle is the latest project for a series of journeys on water by British Adventurer Dave Cornthwaite.

Dave is a passionate advocate of using sport and travel to encourage greater care and knowledge of the environment, and his expeditions are always shared through a number of mediums, including video, photography and the written word.

Between October and December 2009 Dave completed the first Great Big Paddle expedition, a source to sea venture along Australia’s largest river, the Murray. In 2010 he will undertake a series of mini-adventures on Stand Up Paddleboards leading up to a possible World Record breaking distance journey in 2011.

The aims of the Great Big Paddle
• Raise awareness and investigate the problems faced by the world’s oceans and major river basins
• Raise the profile of self-propelled water travel and the various methods available, creating a knowledge base for others wishing to travel on water
• Encourage a passion for the environment through the promotion of sport and travel – working closely with the Blue Project and Blue Mile
• Fundraise for the AV Foundation, to integrate solar and water-related projects into schools in Africa, Asia and South America
• Create and engage a wide-ranging online community of websites, blogs and social media through the sharing of water expedition-based images, documentary films and factual writing
